The Shannon Lectures in History are a series of public lectures presented by Carleton University’s Department of History in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada. The series brings researchers, practitioners and the public together to explore new perspectives, approaches and methods in historical research.

In a 1978 interview about Toni Morrison’s work as an editor, as a mother, about hurt and loneliness, she shares that writing novels brought her relief, a way of ordering the world. It is well known that Song of Solomon and her other brilliant writing projects were acts of creation that were worked on after-hours.
Moved by the creative relief that Morrison shares, as well as her demanding schedule, Katherine McKittrick, will draw connections between black cultural production, representation, and creative labour that is performed “off the clock” or outside our normative rhythms.
Using 1978 as a touch point, or a prompt (call), McKittrick will share a set of materials, that are tactile and nostalgically analogue, sonic and groovy and sad, and function to elicit solace and creative relief (response) precisely because they cannot be easily captured or institutionalized.
This is a hybrid event. Simultaneous interpretation in French will be available both in person and online.

Parking
Paid parking spaces are available at 395 Wellington Street, on the west side of the building. Parking meters and public parking lots can also be found on the surrounding streets.
Bike racks are also available in front of the building.
Several OC Transpo and Société de transport de l’Outaouais bus routes serve stops located near 395 Wellington Street.
